Minot Native & Movie Star Josh Duhamel
6/23/2009
The life of a movie star is a far cry from life in North Dakota, but Josh Duhamel still cherishes his Minot roots. Duhamel left Minot during a blizzard in 1995 seeking the warmer temps of northern California.
"It was in the middle of the worst winter, maybe worse than you guys had this year. I remember it was 104 below with the wind chill at one point,†says Josh Duhamel.
He lived in Sacramento and San Francisco and just like many other struggling actors had normal jobs including construction and working in an overnight shift in a hardware distribution plant, but then in 1998 he moved to L.A. and was "discovered" while posing as a model. His first major role was in a soap opera called "All My Children" for three years. Then in 2003 he landed a role as Danny McCoy on NBC`s "Las Vegas." It lasted five seasons and 108 episodes.
"The writers strike hit and we never got to actually finish and we ended the show on a "to be continued," which isn`t good,†says Duhamel.
Through this crazy lifestyle Josh has stayed true to who he is.
"To me it`s not much different than it was there. All my best friends are still in Minot,†says Duhamel.
Duhamel comes home to visit those friends about 3 times a year and also to see his family. He has his mother and two sisters in Minot and a sister in Fargo. He`s also part owner in this restaurant in downtown Minot called 10 North Main. His life got really interesting when he got engaged to Stacie Ferguson, better known as Fergie from the band "The Black Eyed Peas." They were married in January.
"Married life is awesome, it really is. It`s better than it was when we were dating,†says Duhamel.
With his schedule and her schedule, finding time together can be challenging.
"We have to schedule like where in the world we`re going to be so we can meet up in the same spot,†says Duhamel.
Perhaps Duhamel`s biggest break so far is co-starring in the blockbuster Transformers movie in 2007. He played Captain Lennox, a Marine that battles the evil Decepticons. And he`s back this summer in the same role in Transformers two with legendary director Michael Bay.
"It was like overload watching that movie. The first time I saw it I had to go home and take a nap,†says Duhamel.
Now fully recognized as a Hollywood star, Duhamel is still proud of where he grew up.
"I love it, I love being from there because it`s a really unique place. I`m genuinely proud to say I`m from North Dakota,†says Duhamel.
